The Master Responds

A lipid profile is a blood test that measures the amount of cholesterol and fats called triglycerides in the blood. Cholesterol and triglycerides in the blood can clot or form a plaque in the arteries, which may in turn lead to development of heart disease. Thus lipid profile tests can help predict your risk of heart disease and allow making early lifestyle changes that lower this risk.

Perhaps it's important to understand the role of these cholesterol & lip-oprotein components.

  • Cholesterol is a fatty substance that's necessary for building cells and producing hormones. In the body, its most commonly created in your liver through a complex pathway. But we can also get choles-terol from the foods we eat, especially meat, eggs, poultry, and dairy products.
  • Triglycerides are another type of fat that's used to store extra en-ergy in your cells. Eating more carb rich food or sugars than required can lead to ex-cessive amounts of triglycerides in blood. Extra triglycerides are stored in fat cells and released at a later time when needed for en-ergy.
  • Lipoproteins are a combination of proteins and various types of fats. They carry cholesterol and triglycerides through the bloodstream. Types of lipoproteins are HDL, LDL, and VLDL.
